Project 4: Formative Assessment Team

Formative Assessment Creation

During the school year I was selected as a Professional Learning Community (PLC) Course Lead (Teacher Leader) for United States History.

I performed the following duties as PLC Course Lead  (Teacher Leader):

  • Helped teachers make preparations to transition to the Common Core Standards.
  • Helped teachers gain an understanding of how to use new adaptive, web-based, mobile friendly technologies such as: Illuminate and Synced Solutions.
  • Collaborated with teachers to construct Common Core and district assessments for the upcoming school year.
  • Uploaded assessment to the illuminate database so that teachers have easy access to them via the Internet.
  • Designed Common Formative Assessments for district use

The collaboration served to help staff throughout the district plan and prepare for a tremendous change that is taking place next school year.  The new common core standards will change how students are assessed and therefore will change how teachers teach and deliver content.

As a school leader it will be important to have to flexibility to adapt to changes in educational policy and testing.  In addition, as a leader it is important to give your staff the assurance that you will do everything in your power to make an impactful transition tolerable.  A school leader must also create professional development opportunities that will prepare teachers to incorporate the new standards into classroom teaching and learning support teachers through large-scale educational reforms.

Reflection

During the collaboration I felt that teachers were more comfortable with the common core standards once they had a better understanding of them and an understanding that tools were in place that would make the transition tolerable.  I learned that teachers need support and if they feel supported they are more likely to accept significant changes occurring within federal and state educational policy and testing.  I also learned that leaders must make staff comfortable with large changes that will affect the way that they perform their daily duties including but not limited to teaching and assessing students.
