Senior Portfolio Presentations Coordinator

Overview

At ALC, our students are placed in a Pathways Class during their first year of high school. This Pathways Class serves the purpose of an Advisory Class. Students submit a work portfolio at the end of each year. During their senior year, the portfolio submission is not complete until they do a formal presentation of their portfolio to their parents/guardians, and an evaluative panel consisting of staff members, alumni, current students, and community members.

Role as a Senior Pathways Portfolio Presentation Coordinator

As a Senior Pathways Portfolio Presentations Coordinator, I met with the other Pathways Teachers to set a date, time frame, and length of the presentations. I also contacted the school’s Leadership Development Senior Meeting 4Coordinator and asked her to contact the local community based organizations to invite community members to be part of a presentation panel. To get professional community members to be part of the panels, I asked Glenn Barney, a school volunteer that is in charge of the Career Journey Speaker Series, to invite the speakers. To contact past alumni another teacher, Scott Rowe, posted the invitation on the school’s Facebook page and sent me emails as alumni signed up. I also worked with the CitiCorps member working at our school to help contact local restaurants and make dinner arrangements the day of the presentations. The Junior Pathways teachers helped recruit current juniors to be part of the panels. The Leadership helped by having his students create posters and signs for the day of the event.

To prep the students for their presentations, the other Pathways Teachers and myself planned and presented at a Senior Meeting where students filled out a form with their choices in time frames and teachers that they would like to be part of their evaluation panel.  I collected the forms and assigned students to a time frame by using an Excel File. The students then made personal invitations toSenior Meeting 1their parents for the Senior Portfolio Night. The Senior Portfolio Night will be held on Thursday, May 23rd, 2013. The two sessions will be held between 2-4:10pm and 5-7:10 pm.

Learned

I learned that in order to plan a school event, it is necessary to be fully organized and create checklists.  I also learned that sometimes it is important to delegate activities in order for the event to be done efficiently. The most valuable lesson I learned by being a Senior Portfolio Presentations Coordinator is the importance of working with others. This event would not have been possible without the support of other teachers, staff members, and a community members. I also learned that students are motivated to impress their parents and teachers by preparing their portfolios and creating invitations for them.
