Project 1 - Staff Supervisor
Overview
As an administrator, one of my most immediate responsibilities was the supervision of staff. My role as a supervisor was to create an environment that promotes a positive working and learning environment for our school community. I consulted and dialogued with staff daily around issues of concern, managed conflicting relationships and used positive reinforcement to bridge gaps during disagreements between staff members. As a supervisor of staff, I worked throughout the year to create a work environment that was supportive, allowed for creativity and one that focused on student learning.
As a Staff Supervisor I:
- Supported and invited collaboration between teachers and support staff on school policies and curriculum development. (Collaborated with teachers on policies regarding field trips, evaluation of staff, and class schedules. Supported curriculum changes in our 1st grade Math program and Meditation)
- Encouraged reflection among staff on their daily work and future goals inside and outside of school. (Dialogued with teachers about classroom practices and instructional frames. Worked with a teacher to help finish course work towards credential and consulted with support staff on education goals for future growth).
- Encouraged inclusion and highlighted the strength in diversity of teaching and classroom management styles. (Managed conflict between teachers regarding their beliefs and styles of teaching).
- Helped school staff build bridges, find positive aspects of working together. (Managed the relationships between parents with teachers and support staff).
My Tasks as a Staff Supervisor:
- Setting clear expectations on job duties and how we work with one another
- Evaluating teacher and support staff performance
- Providing staff development to help support staff in their current and future role
- Meeting regularly with teachers and support staff to discuss work
- Hiring of new staff and orientation and training
- Consulting and Managing conflict between staff
- Mentoring and modeling professionalism
Reflection -
Supervising staff was challenging. It is a learned skill to be able to navigate the many personalities working at a school. My goal was to keep staff focused on student learning by doing my best to bridge their commonalities and highlight positively their diversity. Next year, I would like to do more in helping staff think through and deal with budget issues that impact their livelihood, provide a better model of sustained commitment and professionalism and continue to promote a culture of collaboration so everyone is working together, advising together and solving problems together.
