Local School Leadership Council Teacher Representative

Overview

Our Local School Leadership Council serves as one of the governing bodies of the school. The Leadership Council is charged with monitoring and supporting the instructional content and practices of the school.

Responsibilities

Participate in shared decision making on the following matters:

  • Staff development program;
  • Student discipline guidelines and code of student conduct;
  • Schedule of school activities and events, and special schedules;
  • Guidelines for use of school equipment;
  • Budgetary matters.

Reflection

We met to discuss implementation of strategies to help EL learners. One of the ideas suggested was to fund more TAs to allow for small group work to occur in classrooms. We were able to get the School Site Council to vote and approve a budget that includes hiring more T.A.s for the 2014-2015 school year.

We are also set to look at our PD calendar for 2014-2015. Here will be a great opportunity for me to speak up on behalf of the teachers. I plan on asking for more time to work with our colleagues, planning and refining our instruction, during grade level meetings to help all learners access the CCSS.

Connection to CPSELs

  • CPSEL #1 – As part of the Local School Leadership Council I participated in the shared decision making on various matters such as: Staff development program; student discipline guidelines and code of student conduct; schedule of school activities and events, and special schedules; guidelines for use of school equipment; budgetary matters.
  • CPSEL #2 - The Local School Leadership Council initiated strategies designed to improve instructional practices, including re-aligning our budget and priorities to include hiring more T.A.s and restructuring our professional development sessions to include more time for teachers to collaborate.
  • CPSEL #3 - We fought to make sure that the voices of all stakeholders were heard. I feel the work we did was reflected in the hiring of a Psychiatric Social Worker, a high priority for the parents, the hiring of T.A.s and paying the teacher’s Z-time to provide after school intervention to our neediest students, high priorities for all stakeholders.
  • CPSEL #6 – We worked with the district to obtain their approval to implement a professional development plan that allows for more time for teachers to collaborate in grade-level meetings. We felt this would help address the needs of all learners by giving teachers the time needed to individualize their instruction as much as needed to provide students access to a high quality education.
