Student Bio/Information
Maria Arriaga, a graduate student, is a native Californian of Peruvian decent. She was born in Glendale, California and was raised in the Antelope Valley where she graduated from Lancaster High School (’02). A California State University, Northridge (’08) alumnus, she obtained her bachelor’s degree in Liberal Studies and obtained a multiple subject teaching credential through the Integrated Teacher Education Program. In 2009, Maria obtained her educational specialist credential through Los Angeles Unified School District’s Intern Program.
Professional Experiences
During her professional career, Maria has acquired essential skills as she has served in different capacities at Noble Ave Elementary, an LAUSD elementary school in the San Fernando Valley. During the 2008-2009 academic year, Maria worked as a third grade teacher. Following a year of being a long-term substitute, Maria started her special education career as a Resource Specialist Teacher.
As a Resource Specialist Teacher, Maria has worked diligently in providing students with exceptionalities equal opportunities in accessing the curriculum. Working closely with general education teachers, Maria provides students with meaningful intervention instruction in hopes of reducing the amount of students being mistakenly referred to special education. She has worked with CSUN’s ACT Program by mentoring three apprentice teachers. As a mentor, Maria provided apprentice teachers with observational feedback, curriculum development support, classroom management strategies, and continuous support to novice teachers as they began their teaching careers.
Currently, Maria serves as the school’s testing coordinator where she is coordinating the schools testing schedules and technology needed to facilitate the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium.
Personal Experiences
Maria decided to become a teacher because of the inspiring educators that taught her. It was in high school that she began to volunteer in her fourth grader teacher’s classroom that she knew it was her purpose, to educate the future. During her senior year of high school she was awarded the Carol Devault memorial scholarship awarded to inspiring educators.
Future Goals
With regards to Maria’s career, she is excited to begin her career as an out of the classroom educational leader. Maria is intrigued at becoming an intervention coordinator where she can continue her awareness project to prevent the over identification of minority students in special education. Eventually, Maria would like to become an administrator that focuses on special education in the elementary school setting.
School Information
Noble Avenue Elementary School is a Los Angeles Unified School District elementary school often referred to as “the best-kept secret in the Valley”. Out of the District’s 614 Title One schools, Noble has been named a reward school according to the academic progress that students have made over the past three years. Noble’s API is in the 800’s and is currently a project improvement five school. Currently, there are a total of 920 students enrolled at Noble.
