Common Core Parent Night

Overview

Common Core Parent Night was created to give parents an opportunity to better understand the Common Core State Standards. Support methods were also provided to help parents assist their children in being successful learners.

My Role in Common Core Parent Night

This night was an informational session about the English and Math Common Core standards and the mathematical practices. Parents were given a chance to experience Common Core type problems in groups of 3-4.  We also discussed the detrimental effects of engraining a fixed mindset unto a child’s learning experiences. We wanted to emphasize how parents play an enormous role in molding their child’s attitudes about math and learning. We also shared how students should always keep a growth mindset; the idea that their minds are malleable and growth can be made in any subject as long as they make an effort to do so.

Our goal was to support parents in helping their child find success in the process of learning. As a teacher, I constantly see the damaging effects that children bear due to negative and fixed mindsets about learning. We shared practices found to be influential and helpful for students in our classrooms. Our hope is to provide ongoing parent support through nights and forums such as these.

What I Have Learned

Planning and presenting to a room full of around 50 parents was intimidating and stressful but I was pleased with the turnout.  LACES is unique because we have high parent participation for all of the activities our school holds. I’m excited and hopeful about involving parents in more productive ways in the LACES community. The difficulty in presenting and having discussions with our parents pertained to the diverse views that the group of parents had.  The challenge lies in being able to channel these views into one common vision and goal for our school.
