Secretary of School Site Council
Project Rationale:
I had the privilege as being voted in as the Secretary on our School Site Council this year. I was honored to take on the leadership position and have learned so much. I wanted to join school site council so that I could learn about the allocation of our Title I funds and discover more about our school’s single-plan. In addition, I wanted to witness how my Principal ran the meetings, how items were votes on as well as support our school and district’s mission for increasing parent engagement. Furthermore, I was able to look at our LCAP and review where the funds were being spent and why. I enjoyed being a part of the voting process and helping improve the overall school culture at Green.
Leadership Role:
My role as secretary on the School site council consisted of various items. First, I would send out e-mail and flyer invitation to all members of the school site council one week prior to the meeting. Throughout the meeting, I would take minutes and put motions forward to approve agenda items. During a few occasions my Principal allowed me to co-lead the meetings. I was able to review the budget with my principal before the meeting and provide any suggestions that I thought the members may bring up. Moreover, as a voting member I was able to vote on how the Title 1 funds were allocated at our school. As a team we decided to spend the funds on what William Green needed the most which was on interventions. As a council we reviewed and disaggregated data to ensure we were best meeting the needs of our intervention, ELL, Special Ed and regular Ed populations via the interventions. The interventions consisted of Tier 1(in the classroom) tier 2- meeting with our Language Arts Specialist and assistants. In addition, we reviewed our schools single plan, our LCAP and commented on places we can spend money if there should be any funds remaining. We also, review attendance data and created solutions that my principal implemented immediately to improve our attendance. Finally, I will be presenting my findings on parent engagements from my series of ELA workshops. After the presentation, we will vote on if we will allocate the same amount of money for parent engagement for the 2015-2016 school year.
Reflection:
I learned so much from being a part of the School Site Council. It taught me how to run SSC meetings and how to allocate funds to match the needs of the school. I also found out how important it is to provide the committee with data to help inform their decisions. Reviewing and analyzing the data provided me with a lens of all of the students in the school and where their needs were. I shared my thoughts with the committee that I felt we needed more math support. They all agreed by looking at the numbers presented. Therefore, my principal asked teachers if they would be willing to teach after-school math intervention for extra pay. We got almost every grade level committed to the mission by sharing the data at our staff meeting. We are now running math interventions. I am very pleased with the information I learned during the SSC meetings. I know these skills will be invaluable for my future as an administrator.
