School Assemblies

If you have only one smile in you give it to the people you love. Maya Angelou

Overview:

For the past several years I have led a team that directs and organizes numerous school assemblies. For the 2012-2013 school-year we presented four assemblies: Welcome Back to School Pep Rally, the Christmas Show, the Black History Month Assembly and the 8th grade Talent Show.

Activities:

For each assembly I work with a team of teachers to: develop the storyline, write the script, recruit and train the talent, advertise the show and direct the assembly. Over time, my role has evolved to that akin to a producer. I handle scheduling, developing the initial concept for the assembly, advertising, set design, student dismissals, day-of literature and any other organizational or custodial duties.

Our team has developed a reputation for putting on entertaining and educating assemblies. Students regularly inquire about forthcoming assemblies and teachers often comment on the great value of the events.

In addition, this year we hosted a motivational assembly from Steve Lobel’s Music Production Company. The assembly featured: performers from Mr. Lobel’s Production Company, a motivational address from professional boxer Victor Cruz, as well as, an address from Mr. Lobel. Their team also distributed hundreds of gifts to our students. The event was very well received by the student body.

Reflection:

Throughout my tenure as the school’s de facto assembly producer I have come to highly value the ability of non-academic pursuits to enrich students’ academic experience. Too often, education’s current focus on standards and measurable achievement mitigates other educational experiences to the periphery. Yet, activities outside of the classroom positively and negatively affect the pursuits within the classroom.
